Abstract:

Two bound ledgers containing entries for Central Pacific Railroad Company employees receiving medical treatment at the company-owned hospital or by company doctors. The hospital admittance ledger (181 double pages, 58 x 44 cm) contains entries for approximately 2,700 railroad employees from November 27, 1868 to November 13, 1876. Entries include date of admission and discharge, employee name, year of arrival in California, time employed, foreman, nature of injury or disease, remarks, etc. The record book of private house or office visits (190 pages, 32 x 54 cm) contains similar patient information for approximately 2,250 employees seen from February 1, 1876 to May 24, 1879.

The Central Pacific Railroad Hospital in Sacramento, California officially opened in February, 1870. It was the first hospital in the world dedicated to the care of railroad workers. Railroad laborers were charged 50 cents per month to help fund the cost of their health care.
